“The American Sound” started as a sonic experiment inspired by my love for music that utilizes sampling; which is defined by Merriam-Webster as “the technique of digitally encoding music or sound and reusing it as part of a composition or recording.” I wanted to create a project that was both commercially viable and also preserved the integrity and authenticity of sample-based music. I utilized the public domain to find samples that are free of copyright regulations, yielding a variety of sounds sourced from commercials, music recordings, presidential speeches and public service announcements. Most recordings range in age from 50 to 100 years old. These sounds were combined with samples I recorded myself to create “The American Sound: An Audio Collage".
